Abundant with Spain’s principle archaeological sites, travel in the province of Almeria is giddying retrospective through the most remote of times. Many archaeological finds date as remote as prehistoric times, such as the cave paintings discovered at Los Velez, to the Phoenician settlements of Villaricos in Cuevas del Almanzora, and passing through the site of Los Millares in Santa Fe de Mondújar.
Reminiscent of its past as a Roman colony, ruins of Roman pertinence are also scattered in the province. A statue of Dionysius was excavated at the Roman ruins of El Villar in Chirivel. Since its discovery, the statue has become the symbol of the town. Probably the most intriguing archaeological ruin site is Cerro de Villavieja, in Berja, where an excavated amphitheatre was found palpably preserved. Other towns of archaeological affluence are the towns of Murgi, Vicar and Carcauz, along with the Roman Baths at Balneario de Sierra Alhamilla in Pechina.
Meanwhile, the City of Almeria has a very antiquated past. With that, its many buildings are steeped in history. Of architectural interest, The "Brunell Iron Railway Station" and "The English Cable", "The House of Milk and Chocolate", “The Mercantile" and many more are marvelous feats of engineering to behold. It is very much recommended that the visitor join "Between the Centuries" tour.
